“U.S. News & World Report” Ranks Schlichter, Bogard & Denton Among the Best in the Nation
Schlichter, Bogard & Denton received a National Tier 1 rating for the Railroad Law practice area in the prestigious U.S. News & World Report 2014 Best Law Firms ranking. The firm was additionally ranked Tier 1 for metropolitan St. Louis in two additional practice areas – Personal Injury Litigation and Plaintiffs Railroad Law. These superior rankings are the result of the publication’s rigorous evaluation process, including surveys of the firm’s clients and attorneys outside the firm.
In order to be considered for a Best Firm award, at least one attorney with the firm must be included in the U.S. News Best Lawyers ranking for a particular practice area. Jerome Schlichter and Nelson Wolff, partners with Schlichter, Bogard & Denton, were each selected by their peers to receive this honor. Inclusion in Best Lawyers is based on an exhaustive and rigorous process, comprising more than five million confidential evaluations by top attorneys.
Founding and managing partner Jerry Schlichter has been designated legal counsel for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers for many years and is currently designated legal counsel for the United Transportation Union. He has represented railroad workers in trials in many states and has had record-setting jury verdicts in numerous jurisdictions, both in railroad and other personal injury cases. He has obtained multiple precedent-setting judgments against railroads, including successfully requiring a railroad and the Federal Railroad Administration to modify its rules on certification of railroad engineers; successfully obtaining a permanent injunction against the Union Pacific Railroad for all of its employees, which stopped the railroad’s practice of interfering with employees’ ability to pursue injury claims; and obtaining the first and only jury verdict in the United States in which a jury determined that a locomotive was not crashworthy, resulting in a jury verdict of $4.75 Million, which was the highest verdict against that railroad by an injured employee in its history.
Partner Nelson G. Wolff represents railroad employees in personal injury and death cases under the FELA, and maritime workers under the Jones Act. Throughout his career, he has successfully tried cases in multiple jurisdictions and recovered millions of dollars on behalf of injured railroad workers and inland river mariners. An example of his work is a case for an injured railroad worker who was unable to return to his job as a conductor, where the jury awarded a verdict of $12.5 million against the BNSF Railway Company. Additionally, Nelson has been serving on the Board of Governors of the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys since 2004. He has been selected for inclusion in the 2014 edition of Best Lawyers in America in the specialty of Railroad Law, and has been selected as a Missouri and Kansas Super Lawyer by the publisher of Law & Politics in every year since 2005 in the field of Transportation Law. Nelson has had numerous articles published in legal journals on personal injury subjects and has presented legal seminars to other attorneys.
